This Center serves the families of University of Washington staff, faculty, and students

The new two-story facility is located at 3745 15th Ave NE in South Campus. Our new space, renovated in late 2016, serves 138 children with two infant rooms, three toddler rooms, four preschool rooms and plenty of outdoor space.

The Infant program at UWCC Portage Bay is based on the teachings of Magda Gerber and the RIE (Resources for Infant Educators) philosophy. This approach of being with infants is based on respectful and responsive caregiving in the least restrictive environment that is as safe as possible. The Toddler and Preschool age classrooms are organized around Montessori philosophy. The Montessori classroom is a prepared environment which offers your child the freedom to make their own choices, learn at their own pace and fully experience the joy of learning.

Location
The UW Children's Center at Portage Bay is located at the former site of the UW Transportation Center at 3745 15th Ave NE, conveniently located in South Campus.

Program
Our Preschool and Toddler programs are based on the Montessori Method.  Our Infant program uses the RIE philosophy.  We strive to maintain a 3:1 staff to child ratio with Infants, 5:1 with Toddlers, and 10:1 with Preschoolers.

Our operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm.

Calendar events are tentative based on COVID-19.

Enrollment
We care for children from 3 months - 5 years of age.  Portage Bay is a part of the UW Childcare system, which gives priority to those families affiliated with the University.  Equal priority is provided to children of eligible faculty, staff or student.
